Today we will review our coming assignments and begin creating some spreadsheets with Twitter data. To get started, you should review the three big pieces of the unit:
- Feeder 1.1 Twitter Analysis and Visualizations
- Feeder 1.2 Twitter Report Bibliography
- Unit Project 1 Twitter Report
Once you have a sense of the big picture, you might want to review some of the topic postings from last night to see how other people are thinking about topics and hashtags. Before proceeding, identify one or two hashtags that look particularly valuable for the research project.
The main task is to create your initial spreadsheet that you will use to gather and analyze tweets.
The instructions are in this video, and here are the basics:
Make sure you have a Twitter and a google account and are logged in or know your login information.
Go to the TAGS spreadsheet and Make a Copy of V6.1
Once the spreadsheet has been copied to your google drive, use the TAGS menu in the spreadsheet and select Setup Twitter Access
Follow all of the access instructions so that you can authorize the account to pull data from Twitter. This is the tricky part, but be persistent, check the video for more details, and let me know if you need help.
Once you have the access set up, from the TAGS menu, select Run Now!
From the TAGS menu in the spreadsheet, select the Update Archive Every Hour
That should be it. By the end you should have a spreadsheet that is collecting tweets every hour. Click the Archive tab at the bottom to check.
Now start to look over the tweets in your spreadsheet. Take notes if helpful as you think about the kinds of postings that you see.
