Science Podcast Start Here

Today we will turn toward conducting research and working on a bibliography of sources and media for our next unit--natural sciences. Before getting started, you should review:

After you have read all of these assignments for the unit carefully, you can begin doing the research and media work for Feeder 2.1. Start by watching these two videos:

Next, you will need to generate your topic and begin conducting research. You may already have an idea for a topic that you want to work on. For the purposes of our podcast, we will emphasize topics about which there is some debate in a discipline or topics where scientific knowledge or research is linked with social concerns.

Once you have your topic, you can jump to the library web site and begin working on the bibliography assignment. I recommend starting with the E-Research by discipline page. You might find that even browsing and conducting some preliminary searching on this site is useful for refining or identifying your topic. When ready, use this link to post your bibliography.

Begin the process of collecting your sources. For the second half of our next task, I will post a separate tutorial that shows you how to work with some of the media pieces that you will find.

You will also want to complete this reading assignment by posting a comment after you read pages 3-13 of the Tarheel Writing Guide.

Finally, there is a technical task that we will work on to help us get up to speed with our audio editing tasks and podcasts. Follow these steps:

Download and install the Audacity audio editor to your computer. Audacity is a free editor that we will use for this project. If you want to use an alternative editor, that is fine, but the tutorials will focus on audacity.

Next, make sure you have signed up for a zoom account with your UNC onyen. You will also want to download the zoom application. All of the information for this is at zoom.unc.edu.

Next, learn to capture audio using zoom. This has a number of steps. The basics are 1) record your zoom session to your computer, 2) turn off microphone, 3) Share screen, making sure to Share computer sound, 4) play an audio clip from the web, 5) stop recording when finished, 6) Leave/End zoom meeting.

The easiest way to get the hang of it is by watching and following this video:

Once you have learned the process of capturing audio clips, you can move to finding three solid examples to use for your projects. These are likely to be the same clips that you list in your Feeder 2.1 bibliography. Capture three audio files using zoom, and then you can move on to trimming and submitting them.

To trim the clips, you will need to open them in Audacity. You can go to File > Import > Audio, and then locate the clip. (You can also drag and drop the clips in the editor.) Once you open the clip in Audacity, you can select the beginning and end and delete extraneous material. (If you have trouble, try installing the FFMPEG plugin for Audacity.)

Finally, you can export the clips as mp3 files: File > Export > Export as mp3. The video below gives the instructions for the process.

To complete this task, trim and export three audio clips as mp3 files.
