Science Podcast Step 8

Today, we will complete the review process on our podcast drafts and revisit the steps needed to complete our work with unit two. Here are the details:

First, you should have received feedback on your podcasts and reviewed the podcasts of others. (I will also be posting feedback.) Look over all of the reviews that have been posted to your podcast. After looking over all of the reviews, listen to your podcast draft one more time, and then compose an e-mail to me. In your e-mail, respond to the following prompts:

  • What have you learned about this project from listening to the podcasts of your classmates?
  • After looking over the feedback you have received, summarize the two or three biggest items that need attention as you revise the podcast.
  • What have you learned about the rhetorical aspects of these audio essays as a genre of writing?

your responses before 9:45 on Thursday, July 16th.

Next, also related to unit two, you can begin revision work on the bibliography for the science podcast (Feeder 2.1). You should have received feedback on your draft. For the final version of the feeder, we will turn the document into the bibliography that tracks all of the sources for your final podcast; complete these steps:

  • Adjust the format and respond to any other comments that have been made about the draft.
  • Remove the annotations from the bibliography.
  • Remove any sources that did not make it into the final podcast.
  • Add any sources that are in the final podcast but not yet in the bibliography. (Include the audio materials you have used as well as the research that you formally reference in your narration.)
  • Check and edit the formatting of all of the entries (APA style).

You can keep adding sources as you revise the podcast; you will submit the revised bibliography with the final version of the podcast.

Finally, you will revise the podcast itself based on the feedback you have received and your own judgments. Pay particular attention to these concerns as you work:

  • Narration and voice. Remember we want a conversational tone for the podcasts. You should think of the recording of your voice as a performance. You can experiment with different ways of delivering the speech, and then aim to capture as compelling a draft as possible. Also, as you mix together the audio, make sure the adjustments give the narration full presence in the piece. You don't want the speech to be competing with background music (which should be soft and unobtrusive) or to be less powerful than the clips that you put together.
  • Transitions. In addition to looking for strategic ways to signal transitions--with music, sound effects, pauses, or the language signals in your narration--make sure that all audio fades in and out smoothly as the piece moves from segment to segment.
  • Fine tuning. Listen to the piece carefully; use headphones if available. Make sure all of the volume levels are evened out. Make sure the fading in and out of all elements is smooth. Clean up any background noise. I will post a tutorial with technical details on these aspects.

You will complete the final version of the podcast and the bibliography, then submit both items.
