Explore issues of data and identity using the web site Pinterest, and then develop a video that reports on your findings. This project has two components: 1) exploring concerns related to data and Pinterest by conducting and comparing search results and 2) composing videos that bring together research, data, narration, and imagery in vertical formats.
For the work with Pinterest, you will use a tool that has been developed to collect data and images. There will be several logistical steps related to this part of the project that we will work through in our daily tasks:
- Pinterest scraping and data literacy. For this task, we will complete a survey and make sure we are all set up knowing how to scrape and download images from Pinterest.
- Comparing and analyzing data. We will explore how Pinterest customizes its content based on user profiles.
- Capturing and reporting results. We will use Snagit to create videos and still images that show our process and aspects of our Pinterest data.
Each of these tasks will require some hands-on work with our collection platform and Pinterest data. For our video composing, the activities should be familiar from our DH project reports. The big difference is we will make videos in vertical/portrait format.
As we work on the video, you can most likely be self-driven in terms of drafting, and you can connect as needed for help along the way. Again, we will work through the project is stages using our daily tasks and remote connections. The video report is due on Tuesday, April 21st.
