We will spend some time talking about our readings. We will think about the idea of a data identity and the ways that curation can shape how we are viewed online. After that conversation, we will move on to the next stage of our Pinterest project. Be sure that you have already conducted the five searches from last week and saved all of the data and images associated with them.

For step two, we will create a new Pinterest account and "curate" an alternative identity. When you create the account, change the details to construct an identity that is likely to differ in interesting ways from the profile you used to search last week--manipulate settings like gender, language, age, location, etc. Follow these steps:

  • First, create a throwaway e-mail address. You can use this site, which will give you a disposable account for 10 minutes. Copy the address from that site.
  • Next, in your browser, make sure you are logged out of the Pinterest account you have been using. Then, create a new Private or Incognito browser window and go to https://www.pinterest.com/. (Note you may want to turn on Snagit and record what happens next, to document how your identity play and sign-up process play out.)
  • Using the disposable e-mail address, sign up for new Pinterest account. Keep track of the passwords and e-mail address you use. Be deliberate about how you fill in the identity information. Also, make choices about the five interests you are asked to identify. Take screen shots or captures to keep track of what is happening.
  • Once you create your account and are logged in, go to the settings and Edit Profile. Make note of your Pinterest user name. Also create some biographical information that furthers the identity you are trying to construct.
  • Finally, while still logged in, spend about thirty minutes interacting on the site. Conduct searches that might further shed light on the data identity you want to construct. Locate images that seem to resonate with your constructed identity. Save/Add the to a board, giving the board a name that resonates with your identity. (Again, consider capturing some of this activity so you can potentially use it later.)

After you have created an alternative Pinterest account/identity, you will return to our scraping platform. You will login with your new identity. You will conduct the same five searches that you undertook last week. Again, saving the results. After you have completed this second gathering of artifacts, we will move on to the final aspect of our Pinterest assignment.

The grid below has the times and assignments for the searches. Also the instructions are reproduced here, but remember to use the same specific terms you used last week--e.g., for color, use the same color:

  • Search 1: a color (e.g., red, green, blue, etc.)
  • Search 2: a place (e.g., France, Las Vegas, beach, park, etc.)
  • Search 3: a specific term relevant to current moment: "homeschool."
  • Search 4: a specific term: "family vacation."
  • Search 5: an item of clothing (e.g., shoes, jacket, boots, etc.)

For each of these searches, you will use the platform to complete a series of tasks:

  1. Login (remember the credentials must be exact and match your Pinterest details)
  2. Download My Info (this will save your Pinterest ID data)
  3. Conduct the search (be patient while images load); explore by rolling over some of the images. Use Snagit to capture some of the initial details as video footage.
  4. Download Images to Server (This will allow you to move on to the analysis page.)
  5. Go to the Analysis Page (This will take you to a new page where you can analyze)
  6. Select the Search to Analyze; then Download this Folder to Your Local PC (this will save the image results)
  7. Peek in the Folder (this will let you see the images)
  8. Analyze This Folder (This will let you see word clouds and other information.)
  9. Download the Analysis Results to Your Local PC (this will let you save the word clouds and other results)
