Today, we will spend a few minutes discussing our reading. For this we will use a combination of zoom chat and video.

Next, I will check on a brief survey that I'd like you to complete before we embark on our Pinterest work. You should have received an e-mail link to the survey. If you have not, let me know and I will generate it for you.

Next, we will go over our next assignment. For this activity, I will walk us through the instructions while recording the screen. If you are unable to make the zoom session, please check the recap for the video instructions.

Here are the instructions:

First, complete the survey before getting started with the scraping.

Also, make sure that you have an account on Pinterest. And be sure to have ready three pieces of information: 1) the e-mail associated with your account, 2) the username for the account, and 3) your password.

Next, use the Pinterest scraping platform to conduct five searches. For the searches, we will all use common terms so that we can compare results:

  • Search 1: a color (e.g., red, green, blue, etc.)
  • Search 2: a place (e.g., France, Las Vegas, beach, park, etc.)
  • Search 3: a specific term relevant to current moment: "homeschool."
  • Search 4: a specific term: "family vacation."
  • Search 5: an item of clothing (e.g., shoes, jacket, boots, etc.)

For each of these searches, you will use the platform to complete a series of tasks:

  1. Login (remember the credentials must be exact and match your Pinterest details)
  2. Download My Info (this will save your Pinterest ID data)
  3. Conduct the search (be patient while images load); explore by rolling over some of the images. Use Snagit to capture some of the initial details as video footage.
  4. Download Images to Server (This will allow you to move on to the analysis page.)
  5. Go to the Analysis Page (This will take you to a new page where you can analyze)
  6. Select the Search to Analyze; then Download this Folder to Your Local PC (this will save the image results)
  7. Peek in the Folder (this will let you see the images)
  8. Analyze This Folder (This will let you see word clouds and other information.)
  9. Download the Analysis Results to Your Local PC (this will let you save the word clouds and other results)

Again, from time to time take screen captures of your results and analysis.

When you have completed this process for one search term, move on the the others.

Because we want to space out the calls to the API as we work, we will use the grid below to guide us with the timing and link to the scraping platform.

Once we all have a clear sense of the process of collecting the Pinterest images, we will disburse and you can continue to work on aspects of the class.
