Today, we will spend a few minutes looking over steps involved in composing your course portfolios. When ready, you will use the Portfolio posting on our site.

After that, you can get started composing your video reports on our experiences with Pinterest. Find below a complete prompt for the project:

Create a video report that responds to the prompt: What can Pinterest teach us about data, identity, and digital literacy? The video may be somewhat like your DH Report video in sharing information and research. You can refer to the readings we have done and/or conduct additional research into data, digital literacy, or aspects of Pinterest. You can integrate research as quotations on screen or into the narration of the video.

The video can also use the raw materials from your searches and interactions with Pinterest over the last two weeks. For this work, identify insights you have gathered from the process. Did certain search terms return surprising results? How did your second search with a constructed identity differ from your first effort? Were there moments where your data identity seemed to be shaping the results? Aim to identify a few interesting aspects of the search results and engagement with Pinterest.

Finally, develop a storyboard and script for the video. As you construct your plan, you may want to organize around some key questions: As I look back on the experience and consider the data retrieved from Pinterest,

  • What do I notice about gender, class, ethnicity, or social groups?
  • What do I notice about my digital identity?
  • What am I learning about data literacy?

You can, of course, pursue additional questions or organize the video around another angle or different topics. For the logistics, aim for a video in the 4-7 minute range. Include narration. Create the video in vertical/portrait format. Include music, sound effects, montages, and other elements to maintain interest.
