Welcome to ENGL 105. In this class we will be writing a good deal--and quickly. To get started complete the following steps before class on Tuesday:

1. Work with Twitter: Create or make sure you have access to a Twitter account. We will not be tweeting related to this class, but you will need it for our first research project.

Once you have your Twitter account confirmed, your homework task is to begin looking for hashtags that will translate into topics for a social science research project. You will need to move back and forth between brainstorming about topics you find interesting and searching on Twitter for hashtags that capture the topic and have significant activity.

First, explore topics by browsing through the possibilities at sites like this or this. Take notes and develop some lists of possibilities for research.

Next, conduct searches on Twitter for hashtags related to some of the topics you have identified. As you search, look for topics/hashtags that have a good deal of activity. Also look for conversation that seems to offer some variations on perspectives or that might be interesting for analysis. Make a list of at least four potential hashtags.

2. Posting on our class site: First, create an account on our web site. Once you have filled out the form, you will be sent an e-mail with instructions.

After your account is created, and you have conducted your Twitter activities listed above, add a comment to this posting. In the comment:

1.) list several of the topics that you explored on Twitter and the hashtags that seemed to be promising for capturing conversations related about your topic; and

2.) Compose a paragraph about your experiences with writing and technology. Discuss any media expertise you have. Detail your strengths and weaknesses as a writer. Explore your understanding of writing in terms of technology.

Post your comment before class on Tuesday, June 25th.

I consider myself pretty experienced with writing and technology. I am very good with technology because I have always been on top with the newest ideas since I was a young kid. I enjoy tech because there is so much you can do and it is determined by you. I am not the strongest writer, so I plan to work on that going forward. My strengths in writing is the ability to come up with the ideas. Then my weaknesses as a writer is using the ideas and making them sound clear.

1. I am interested in politics and international relations and how they are perceived in popular culture, so I explored hashtags about movements such as Black Lives Matter, hashtags related to Iran and U.S. relations, patriotic hashtags, and make America great again hashtags. I think I will focus either on what political party most people who post patriotic things belong to in the U.S. or whether or not the majority of people using make America great again hashtags are Trump supporters or anti-Trump users.

2. I don't have much experience with different technologies. I have never created a video or a podcast. Most of my experience with writing comes from AP English Language and AP English Literature. I enjoy writing across many disciplines and I'm excited to learn more in this course. My main weakness as a writer is probably my tendency to prefer more complex grammatical structures and vocabulary that make my writing less concise than it should be. My main strengths are my ability to express my opinions and research through writing. I always know what I'm trying to say.

I would consider myself well versed in both writing and technology because I've taken advanced level courses in both subjects. The technology classes I've taken exposed me to many new aspects of media/production/computers. Most of the writing I have done is research papers and literary analysis in school so I am excited to be exposed to new ways of writing. I am confident in my ability to time manage and organize my writing. I need to on improve my grammar, mechanics, and making my ideas sound clearer in my writing. I haven't had much exposure in writing and technology regarding each other.

I would consider myself above average with using and understanding technology, considering that I was raised with it surrounding me during my childhood. My media expertise range from making highlight tapes to making a vlog for my senior year English project. I am very strong with knowing what to include and exclude for papers. I struggle with over using commas mainly and other punctuation also with repetition. I have written most of my papers using technology and I have also written papers on technology and it’s advancements.

I feel as if I am strong with electronics. I like to keep up to date with the latest inventions or innovations. I had experience in media through I have made highlight tapes for football to promote myself as an athlete. I also participated in making the yearbook for my high school for three years and had to promote to sell the yearbook and also raised for the production of it. I’m not the strongest writer but I plan on becoming better.

Besides growing up around technology and learning how it works on my own, I've never had many classes that involved using a lot of technology. I have always enjoyed English and writing over the years and am excited to continue to learn and improve. My strength is finding good data and information to use in essays/projects. My weakness is I sometimes have trouble expressing my thoughts into words.

I would consider myself to be knowledgeable about using technology and writing. I don't particularly have any media expertise beside making videos on YouTube for class projects. My strength in writing comes from the format of it and placing a nice and coherent flow throughout the work. My weakness is definitely my grammar and how to not state the same points throughout the work.

I have not had much experience with writing and technology together. I think technology has caused many writers and reporters to state news that have not been fact checked to keep up with the speed of other competitors. Technology has increased the speed of writing. I have had experience with compositions papers, argument essays, Rhetorical analysis, and synthesis essays. My strengths as a writer would be coming up with big ideas. However, I struggle with syntax and grammar structure. Writing in terms of technology now a days seem to be one sided with either a pro or a con on a certain topic instead of being a neutral resource.

I would say that my ability with writing and technology is average. Although I have always kept up with the newest technology, I personally believe that my comprehension with technology could evolve. I have taken classes based off technology, so I have gathered information based off technology before. Within the technology classes they taught me how to comprehend the ideas from media, and helped me with the understandings of sources and resources given. As for my writing, I have taken advance classes, but I believe that there is always room for improvement and that there is always new things to learn through literature. I would consider my strongest aspect in writing to be my ability of time management and my ability to follow a topics given. I would say my biggest area for improvement would be my Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation.

2. Opioid Crisis #opioids #opioidcrisis #opioidepidemic #overdose #harmreduction

Experience-

As a senior transfer student majoring in political science, I have written countless papers over the past few years. However, I would consider research papers, essays and general writing assignments the most grueling part of my college experience thus far. I don't want to convey the message that I hate writing; I just find it incredibly difficult to  conceptualize and create coherent sentences and arguments. Even writing this paragraph is a struggle, because I feel like it doesn't make sense or I'm not expressing myself correctly. I think it is a strength to be thorough and meticulous in my writing. I would also argue that those same qualities are my biggest weaknesses as it hinders progress towards completing assignments and it causes a lot of unnecessary stress and anxiety.

1. A main point from Donald Trump's campaign has been illegal immigration. #BuildTheWall

2. Our food safety is becoming a much larger discussion, especially in the agriculture industry. #foodsafety

3.  Women in sports are attracting more attention, especially with the attention to equality with men’s sports. #womenssports

4.  Abortion has been a very controversial topic lately, especially after laws regarding abortion have recently been passed. #prolife

In my experience with writing, we rarely incorporated technology into our writing.  It was only used to type and turn in essays and sometimes research.  I know how to do basic things on a computer and will be able to learn any new techniques I need.  I also know how to work with social media platforms.  My strengths as a writer include my organization and logic as I write an essay.  I am able to draw connections between topics which relate to my overall point.  As a weakness, I am not very creative.  I prefer to just write and get my point across with enough depth, however I would like to be able to evaluate topics with deeper understandings.

I am not entirely the best when it comes to using technology. I have obviously used it for certain projects that I did in the past, but I never really used it too much. In regards to my writing, I have done a good amount of papers in the past, but there is always room for me to improve my writing, however, I wouldn't say that it is terrible. Lastly, when it comes to using technology to replace writing or using it as an alternative to formal essays, I am not very familiar with that. I haven't really done anything like what we have listed in the syllabus for this class.

Topic 4. #CTE- contact sports brain trauma

Overall I feel pretty comfortable with writing and technology especially the technology piece. I am actually Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, and Excel certified due to IBA and a few other high school classes. However I do have some weaknesses with putting together a well written, organized paper. I have many ideas that come to my head but I struggle to organize the paper to make it clear and completely understandable for the reader. It's more of a bunch of ideas and bits and pieces just kind of thrown together. I feel like I can definitely improve the use of higher level and bigger vocabulary as well as some grammatical issues.

Throughout my school career I have not been asked to use much technology when it comes to writing. The majority of the exposure that I have had comes in the form of research and the general typing of the papers. Due to this, I haven't had much practice when it comes to media use and other technology uses but when it comes to social media specifically, I am significantly more comfortable. As a writer I generally have a hard time getting feelings and emotion across as well as sometimes I can become too direct when answering questions or explaining topics. This leads to intentionally long writing assignments becoming more difficult.

I would consider myself decently experienced with writing and technology. I was previously a writing/English tutor and have experience with various types of writing such as research papers, lit analysis, lab reports, grant proposals, rhetorical analysis, etc. I feel confident in my argumentative/research-based writing, but I do have trouble with scientific reports. Organization can also difficult for me when I begin to write. In terms of technology, I've had experience with microsoft, recording voiceovers, creating videos, making commercials, etc. Most of my experience with technology has been in relation to my writing (for example, videos/powerpoints based on my essays), but I have not used technology specifically in the way that we will use Twitter for our first project.

When it comes to technology I am very well oriented as I have been using it throughout all of high school. The same goes for writing as I have taken several high level writing classes which I believe have strengthened my skills. I have some experience in media as I used to produce videos and enter them into competitions when I was younger. As for my strengths and weakness of writing, I believe my strength is that I am able to put my thoughts down on paper and make the point I am trying to make. My weakness is that my structure is not always the best it can be and I would like to improve in that area over the course of this class.

2.

Growing up, I have been exposed to a technology-driven world. Considering that, I would say my understanding of technology is competent enough to quickly become comfortable with media I rarely use. The media I use most is social media. I've never considered myself the strongest writer; mostly because I struggle to put ideas down on paper, or my ideas are too compact. My strength in writing would probably be my research ability and my willingness to improve all aspects of my writing.

Prior to my senior year, all the work I had done in English consisted of essays and readings. This past year, my English teacher took a different approach than what I was used to. I am pretty experienced with writing and technology, but this past year I was more exposed to technology in English with projects like podcasts, videos, and book reports. My strengths in writing would include following prompts along with correct use of grammar and punctuation. My weaknesses would be keeping my thoughts organized and broken up into paragraphs.

Writing Experience

I would consider myself to be above average when it comes to technology. I have taken multiple computer science classes, generally interested in computer software, computer hardware and tech. I also have used many social media platforms so I should be able to navigate them without problems. As for writing, I am a couple years removed from writing essays as the last essay I wrote was for college applications. However, I should be able to remember some of the skills I learned in the AP classes I took in high school. My strength in writing is making sure I fulfill the requirements and prompts and my weakness is writing creatively. I haven't written anything in terms of technology before either.
