Today, we will go over the next stage of our assignment, and then we will work on an improv task for about fifteen minutes.

Here are the in-class steps:

Identify a video clip on YouTube or Vimeo that might be good for an animated GIF. You might look for

  • Human, movement, gesture or expression
  • Kitschie, old school TV or culture
  • Animals
  • Sports moments

Use a screen recorder to rip about two seconds of the video into an mp4 file. Keep the dimensions small--e.g., 360X240. Use Adobe Rush to clean up or resize the video, and then export it again as a final mp4 for the project.

Open Photoshop and create a new file using 360X240 pixel dimensions

Go to the File menu and select Import > Video Frames to Layers

Make sure the Make Frame Animation box is checked. (You can also experiment with skipping some of the frames.)

Once the layers have been imported, add some text to create an animated meme.

For to the File Menu and select Export > Save for Web

In the dialog box that appears, choose the GIF format

Export your project as a GIF file

Go to our class web site and choose Add Content > Improv Animated GIF

Upload your GIF file, and then see how it appears on the site.

When finished with this excercise, we will review these updated steps for completing the video poem revision:

  1. Export the final video as an mp4 file.
  2. Upload the file to YouTube or Vimeo (create an account if needed)
  3. Copy the web address of the video once it has been uploaded to YouTube or Vimeo
  4. Take a screen shot of an image from the video to be used as a thumbnail. Make sure your screenshot is no more than 1920 X 1080 pixels and no smaller than 1080 X 460 pixels. Use photoshop to size the image, and then go to File > Export > Save for Web, and then select a JPEG Format with Low Quality to save the file.
  5. Go to the Add Content option on our web site, and select Revised Video Poem
  6. In the revised video poem posting, add a title with the name of the poem; upload the screenshot image that you have taken; enter the web address of the video; and compose a two- or three-sentence description.
  7. Submit the posting

For homework, complete the revisions of your video poem, and then begin to identify the materials and text you want to use for your animated GIFs.
