Today we will experiment with the best ways of integrating "expert audio" snippets from others into our essays. Before getting started, we will prepare our Audacity programs to export files in mp3 format. Follow these steps:

First, open the file you are composing with the draft of your audio essay. (If you have yet to begin the project, you will need to open a new project.)

Next, download and install the LAME library. Follow these links and instructions.

Once you have installed the library, you should be able to export your audio projects in mp3 format.

Next, we will share the clips we are weaving into our projects so we can discuss strategies for identifying the nuggets of content within them and for writing in and out of them.

Follow these steps:

Use the selection tool to highlight the segment(s) of your project with the "expert audio."

With the segment highlighted, export it as an mp3 file:

File > Export Selected Audio

In the dialog box that appears, under File type, choose mp3, then export.

If all works well, you should be able to save an mp3 file. If you don't get this to work, we can troubleshoot, but it is not a major problem, and you can continue to use WAV format for exports as needed.

Repeat this process for all of the expert audio pieces in your essay.

Finally, upload the expert audio to our class site so we can discuss it. Use the Expert Audio Snippets posting type, and upload as many files as you have.

Once you have uploaded your snippets, you can continue working on the audio essay.

If you need to rip audio, here are the details:

If you just need to get audio out of clips that are on YouTube, you can download this YouTube to mp3 converter. It should be reasonably straightforward to then save mp3 files to your desktop

If you need to capture materials from sites other than YouTube, we will use a more complicated method that involves first capturing a screen recording, and then converting it two mp3 format.

1. The first option to try is an online screen recorder which will be easiest to install and use:

If you go to this link: https://www.apowersoft.com/free-online-screen-recorder?__c=1 you will be asked to download a launcher program--don't download the desktop version. Once you download the launcher, you should be able to capture and save videos. These videos will be saved in mp4 format.

Once you have this program set up on your laptop, bookmark the site above so you can return to it when you need to capture materials.

Once you have used the program above to create mp4 files, you can download an mp4 to mp3 converter, and use that to create audio materials.

If the options above do not work, then I will work with you to find alternatives that allow you to rip sound from materials you find. As you work, make sure the persons near you are able to complete the tasks as well and help as needed.

For homework, continue working on the draft of your audio essay, which will be due before 11:00Am on Saturday, March 23rd.
