Today we will start by giving feedback on some of our poetry video drafts.
As we discuss the drafts, we will aim to come up with a punchlist of items to consider as you prepare your video for submission. The list might include:
- Fading and transitions
- Audio levels
- Clips on the canvas
- Delivery of text
- Visual materials
- What else?
As you work to finalize your video, if you Snagit trial has ended, and if you need to capture material, you can use this tool.
We will also go over the steps needed to submit your video:
- Share/Export the video in mp4 format
- Upload the video to YouTube or Vimeo
- Submit a posting with the address of the video.
Next, we will conduct a brief writing exercise. Follow these steps:
Think about your work on the poetry video and these prompts:
- What have you been wrestling with in terms of choosing imagery to include with the poem?
- What decisions have you made that involve sound?
- What have you been thinking about in terms of delivering the words of the poem in the video?
- What insights into the poem have you developed based on creating the video?
- How might any work that you have done on the video inform revisions of your poetry essay?
Think over all of these prompts, and then use the comment field on this posting to discuss your thoughts; write freely for about five minutes.
Once we have conducted and discussed the exercise, we will look at another example from our paper drafts, and then look at the submission form for the final poetry essay. Also, note that you should submit the paper printout that I gave you with feedback as well by turning it in to me when you have finished your revisions.
After we have completed these activities, you can use the class time to work on your video or essay revisions.

1. I have been wrestling with the direct and abstract imagery to include with the poem. The video is mostly direct but the abstract parts are highlighted. I need to work on blending them in to where they are noticeable but don't look like they won't fit.
2. I decided to blend a heavy and dark music with a narrator reading the poem. I also have baby audio clips at the end to make the viewer pay attention to it.
3. The words have to be delivered in a unique way as to not make it be bland. A way that I did this was to make any reference to death, be in a small font compared to the rest. I also made heavy words either have a red shadow or a different color.
4. The poem was initially supposed to be overcoming death but while editing, I decided to change my approach. I instead started to make the message that death should not be feared because you are leaving a legacy for the future.
5. I will be incorporating the theme of the poem that changed for me as the narrator loses to death but through Christianity, he is able to "overcome" it.
I've been focusing on…
I've been focusing on building up my audio before working on my imagery. I had a hard time making the audio I want because I used two different versions of my song in order to complement the poem. I really had to spend time on the audio, but I think I've created an audio to really be proud of. I have a fair amount of nature imagery that I want to use, but I need to better blend my imagery of storms and my imagery of fire. They need to complement each other because they relate but are not the same. I'll work on that tonight I think.
