Today, we will go back to the readings from Wednesday.

Next, we will have a class discussion on fair use and intellectual property. We will use the US Copyright Office guidelines, and then watch a short video.

Next, we will make a list of themes or imagery arising from the beneath-the-water--to use the iceberg metaphor--aspects of our poems. (Did you see what I did?) Think about the readings you've done and the poetic devices and language in your work, then identify at least two kinds of imagery that might be associated with something unexpected related to the poem.

Next, we will practice capturing materials for our projects. You can use the Snagit program. You may also want to use 4K video downloader. Follow these steps:

  • Using the unexpected strands of imagery you have identified, explore video sites.
  • Look creatively for materials. Search for synonyms or related terms, look past the opening screens of search results, try sites like vimeo, etc., instead of just youtube.
  • Allow some randomness to drive your process, if helpful.
  • Spend some time looking for compelling videos, and then capture short segments that you might use. Copy the address of any sources that you use for your records.
  • Record and download at least four clips, keeping track of them.

Once you have downloaded these clips, you can begin to work on the draft of your video poem. Gather different materials as needed, We will use the bulk of our remaining time to compose.

Before the end of class, we will go over submitting and reviewing our poetry essays. Follow these steps:

Submit your essay before 10:00PM tonight (Friday the 19th).

For homework, you will read and respond to the papers of three of your classmates.  Follow these steps:

1.) Begin by finding the classmate's paper from our list of submissions

2.) Once you open the posting, a) download and open the paper, b) locate a copy of the poem, and read it as well, then c) look over the paper once again with the aim of responding to these prompts:

  • Does the essay use quotations from scholarly articles to discuss what people have said about the poem? What can you say about the scholarship?
  • Does the essay zoom offer a reading of the poem? And does it zoom in on details to make points about the poem? What can you say about the interpretation of the poem?
  • And what would be the one larger concern that you have about the essay? What one suggestion would you make to respond to the concern?
  • Also, check the following mechanical aspects of the essay. (If you need to track down information on any proper formats or details, follow MLA style.)
    • Are quotations from articles properly integrated into the essay?
    • Are quotations from the poem properly integrated into the essay?

3.) As you consider these prompts for the essay, open the posting of your peer and add a comment with your responses to each of these prompts.

4.) Once you have completed one review, move on the the other two that you have been assigned.

Complete these reviews before class on Monday. (If a paper has not yet been posted, move on.) Here is the assignment list for the peer reviews:
