Today we will do more hands-on work to prepare for our podcasts. We will split things into three segments. Before getting started, we will review the steps below in terms of our reading from last night and the drafts of our scripts so far.
For the two tasks below we will take about 20 minutes:
1) First, in your group, listen to and make decisions about the media clips you will use for the podcast. You should have 12-15 clips, so you will need to pick out the most useful ones--probably 3-5 clips.
- Begin by having every member of the group listen to the clips; if they haven't already done so.
- Next, if any members of your group were not able to link the clips to the google doc, have that member play the clip for the group from the web for your decision making process.
- Next, discuss the clips in terms of the overall trajectory of the podcast and the value of their content. Narrow down the choices to the clips you want to use, and then edit the google document to indicate the clips you will use in the performance.
2) After you have picked out clips, discuss the document as a whole and revise to map out a general plan for the podcast. Think about finding a mix of clips to play versus quotations to read. Think about:
- what kinds of information might be best delivered through speech by one of the members.
- how you will set up questions that might lead to free-flowing but focused conversation.
- how you will script out concrete transitions between segments of the podcast
- creating paths that will allow every member to have a voice and add research into the broadcast
With all of these concerns in mind, edit the document to create your draft script.
For the third task, we will take about 30 minutes:
3) Finally, we will go over the steps for delivering and recording a mock podcast. I will guide us through the following tasks:
- One member will bring up and stage the media clips on a laptop, ready to play them
- One member will use Audacity and set up a laptop with an external microphone that I will provide for recording the podcast
- The rest of the team will prepare to perform their segments of the podcast
Once these items are in place, we will split up and spend about 30 minutes recording a version of the podcast. After you have captured a version of the podcast, we will reconvene and discuss next steps.
At the end of class, if time permits, we will examine a sample from our first report project.
For homework, revise the google document and script based on your practice run and prepare to deliver the podcast for the class on Wednesday.
