Today we will take a few minutes to experiment with skills helpful to the animated GIF project. Before getting started, you will need to make sure to have the Snagit free trial downloaded and installed. You will next need to identify a video clip that will be a good candidate for an animated GIF. For this experiment, you can use one of these samples:

With these (or some other video) work along as we complete the following steps:

  • Rip a short segment into Snagit.
  • Use the timeline markers to cut out unwanted pieces of your video.
  • Share/Finish the edited clip as an mp4 file.
  • Open the mp4 file in Photoshop (File > Import > Video frames to layers); note the options to limit the frames--experiment with them.
  • Use the Timeline in photoshop to adjust the timing of materials using the video timeline options (scale the timeline, trim the duration of layers).
  • Add a caption that uses two layers of text. Edit to make it work well.
  • Export the GIF, using the number of colors options to reduce the file size.

Finally, we will review some examples of animated GIFs:
