Today, we will experiment with text manipulation using Adobe Premiere. As we work, we will check on our partners next to us to make sure everyone is making progress. Follow these steps:
- First, download this video file to use for the experiment
- Next, open Premiere, and in the Assembly mode find the video you download and bring it in to the timeline. Trim the clip to be about 30 seconds
- Next, use the text tool to add text--the first few words from your The Road quote. Work with the fonts to get them just right, and then right-click on the text item in the timeline, and select Export as Motion Graphics Template, name the template something you will remember
- Next, switch to the Effects mode in Premiere, and then select Effect Control, and then select your text clip
- Use the Transform options for your text element, and the Position keyframe technique to make the text move across the screen. (Check on your neighbors' progress.)
- Next add, another bit of text from your quotation. Use the Effect Controls and the Transform Opacity keyframes to make the text fade in on the screen.
- Next, add the final bit of text from your quotation. Use the Scale keyframe technique to make it zoom up in size.
- Do some final cleanup and trimming, and then Export the video in mp4 format.
When you complete this task, check that your neighbors are making progress and help them catch up.
- Next, open the history palette and revert your file back to the initial opening status, and then position it so that it uses only part of the canvas, leaving empty space for text.
- Add the text of your quotation in two or three chunks to the timeline and position them on the empty space of the canvas
- Select the first piece of text, and then place the playhead about 2/3 down on the piece of text.
- In the Effect Control window, select the Video Effects item, and then Opacity, to open its options.
- Select the rectangle/polygon mask, and then position the mask so that it makes a box tightly around the text.
- Select the Mask Path keyframe clock to create a key frame
- Next, move the playhead to the start of the text item. Next, click on the Mask item in the Effect Control window to reselect the mask.
- Next move the mask from right to left completely past the text on the screen. Check the results. (Check on your neighbors.)
- Complete this step for the other chunks of your quotation
- Do some final cleanup and then export the file in mp4 format
When finished, you can upload your mp4 files (size permitting) to share them with the class using the Improv Video option.
For homework, complete these tasks if able to do so, and begin thinking about or working on ways of using text effects in your video poem.
