In the story, the woman is diagnosed as a woman with hysteria who is given
recommendation of rest for a summer by her doctor. This woman parallels with
Gilman and portrays a part of Gilman's life. Gilman was also given bed rest in
her lifetime and felt opress by male dominance. Gilman did not want to rest in
bed all day and night, she wan't to write stories and do some thing intellectual
but was restricted by her doctor and husband. At this time, a woman could and
would not express herself for hersake and for their beloved husband. They wanted
to satisfy their husbands but did not see that bed rest would benefit them. Both
the woman and Gilman felt the opression either in experience or through the
story. This sort of opression lead to Gilman's literary production of "The
Yellow Wallpaper."
