“Frankenstein Complex” in the Realm of Digital Humanities: Data Mining Classic Horror Cinema via Media History Digital Library (MHDL)

In this digital humanities project, Jiang investigates classic horror cinema, particularly recurring themes, the idea of a "monster," and human emotions towards these films, though a meta-inquiry using data mining techniques through the Media History Digital Library (MHDL). The methodology of the meta-inquiry includes Scaled Entity Search (SES) and POE strategy (which was suggested by the MHDL development team), directly challenging the tradition of close reading by using other means to analyze a narrative and its historical context. Additionally, through this project, Jiang uses these methods to analyze the relationship between classic horror cinema and queer phenomenology.
