Wikipedia and Open-Collaboration Information

My main concern is that I focus too much on the history of Wikipedia and not enough on exploring some of the potential benefits of the site. I am also unsure if my use of colloquialisms in the paper is appropriate, considering it is journalistic.

Hi Mason! Awesome work on the paper, it was really good. You give a great rundown of how Wikipedia came to be and why it received controversy in a great journalistic manner. I learned so much more about the website from reading your paper. That being said, I understand you were concerned about how it focuses too much on history and I wouldn't say that's true. I think the breakdown you give was necessary to understand how the website came to be. I would touch upon maybe the interface of the website and how that could appeal to viewers. Going into a bit of the technological aspect could add to the paper. Nice work!!

Hi Mason,

Very good work! I don't think your use of colloquialisms is a problem at all. Your prose flows well, IMO.

I agree with your own assessment and Emma's comments that you may cover a little too much detail in the history section. It can delay the reader getting to the controversies and potentialities surrounding Wikipedia, which I'm reading as the heart of your piece.

I put some highlights & comments in a PDF, but I'm not seeing where I can upload. I just highlighted from the last new paragraph on page 2 ("And dominate they did...") to the end of the paragraph at the top of page 4 ("...with thousands more being added every day.") with the following comment:

  • Maybe can you could condense these paragraphs into a single one? Perhaps leaving out some of the intermediate highlights?

Suggestion: maybe these paragraphs would work well as an onscreen timeline in your video version. With voice over, you could give condensed highlights, but viewers could see more detail in a graphic timeline. Just a thought!

Otherwise, it seems to like you're in good shape to move on to the video project.

Best,
David
