Pinterest and Gender, Class, Ethnicity, and Social Groups

I think the results of my Pinterest investigation demonstrated correlations between Pinterest and, specifically, gender and ethnicity. I utilized my own account (I am a Hispanic woman) and created a second account made with a throwaway email (Mark Patterson, a non-Hispanic man). Specifically, in the data scraping results for the search of "socks," there were differences in the gendered words and the language of the words. For my own results, the word "ropa," meaning "clothes" in Spanish, appeared in my word cloud, possibly demonstrating that Pinterest picked up on my ethnicity. For Mark's results, words such as "men," "menswear," and "guys" appeared in the word cloud, possibly demonstrating that Pinterest picked up on his gender identity.

Pinterest and Identity

I think the results of my Pinterest investigation demonstrated correlations between Pinterest and one's digital identity. Inevitably, I think my identity as a Hispanic woman may show up digitally due to searches I make online in Spanish, and I think Mark's identity as a man did show up as I purposely tried depicting him as a man. I think that if you're making choices online that display part of your identity, it will show up digitally.

Pinterest and Data Literacy

I think the results of my Pinterest investigation demonstrated correlations between Pinterest and data literacy. Since the word clouds resulted in terms specific to either my identity or Mark's, I feel that Pinterest does collect data in order to improve and tailor their results on the site to appeal to the user's identity.

Thoughts on Vertical Video

I enjoyed utilizing the vertical video! It made artistic choices a little more challenging, since I had to figure out where to stack certain screen caps, but overall, it was enjoyable. If it had been in horizontal mode, I think my video would have been longer, since I would not have stacked screen caps, but I think some of my artistic choices would have been lost.
