Wikipedia

For my project story, I plan to study the origins and impact of Wikipedia using a journalistic approach. Branding itself "The Free Encyclopedia", Wikipedia aims to be an accessible source of knowledge, and it has consistently ranked among the most visited websites of the past two decades. Wikipedia contains at least 40 million articles across 309 different languages, amassing 18 billion page views (as of 2014) and half a billion monthly visitors. It has revolutionized the way we access information, putting vast amounts of knowledge right before our fingertips. It has also completely altered the way we think about who gets to write history—allowing almost anyone to write or edit an article, much to the chagrin to some traditional academics. Regardless, it is clear that Wikipedia is endlessly influential and important, and I plan to study its history and impact across the past 19 years.
