Other Characters in the story

The main characters that Robin encounters are, The first old man, the innkeeper, The strange looking man, The woman who claims to live in Major Molineux's house, and the gentlemen who waits with Robin at the church.

The first thing that I noticed was that all of the older townspeople were very cruel and angry toward Robin, whereas the younger gentleman and the woman were kind to him. Maybe this is because the older people have a much greater hatred of Major Molineux. The first old man that he meets on the street, rebukes Robin angrily when he asks about Major Molineux's location. Also, the innkeeper accuses Robin of being an escaped indentured servant. The man with the red color on one side of his face and black on the other is especially mysterious. When he first appears in the story, he just looks ugly, but his face is not colored red and black, then later at night when Robin sees him again, his face is black and red, and later Robin notices the man on horseback also has a red and black colored face. I think these are the same person, The first time, Robin just happens to see him as he is preparing to get the mob together and march through the streets. He's wearing a hood to conceal his identity and paint on his face. The red and black could represent death and anger, or maybe evil. How it is interpreted depends upon whether or not the mob is supposed to be something evil, or if the mob is meant to represent the violent change that is engulfing the country as the Revolutionary War approaches. Also, maybe the Red and Black is just something imagined by Robin, due to the fact that he is from the old country, and consideres the angry and mob-like behavior of the people he comes across to be evil. Also, since Robin is a country lad, maybe life in the city seems very harsh to him because of his own ignorance.
